I got one of those superhet' kits when i was about 14 maybe 15, but on my 17th b'day i was given a real peice of kit which i still have in the loft, it was a ttl/cmos plug in and play design console. You plugged in the ics and linked then all up using hundreds of these plug in cables....great fun.

That Maplin one is just like what I had a a kid, only mine was one of the Tandy experimenter kits.

Ah those little spring clips to clip your wires under to reconfigure them for different experiments.

Am I the only one that built the Ladybird transistor radio. Built on a piece of wood using screws and screw cups to form each junction?

Another memory as a boy (off topic) was I used to build circuits on veroboard (at least before I discovered ferric chloride, etch resist pens and started making my own pcb's) Well I recall a rival to veroboard being sold, called "Blob Board" The crucial difference was blob board didn't have holes drilled in it, so you soldered the components to the track side of the board.

I recall thinking, what a crazy idea soldering the components to the track side of the board, that will never catch on surely.
